I've been seeking a photographic adventure for a while now and exploring the wilderness of Kosciuszko by snow shoe certainly fulfilled that. As this is not an undertaking that should be taken lightly, Tim Wrate a fellow photographer and I hired the services of Mike Edmondson a snow craft instructor and guide. You don't want to get stuck up the mountains without the proper gear or knowledge especially when conditions can change in an instant. So Mike, armed with the necessities (survival gear, GPS, hot chocolate) led the way. Starting from Dead Horse Gap, on the outskirts of Thredbo we climbed into the back country of Koscuisko and up to the stunning Gum Trees.

Dead Horse Gap a short driver from Thredbo photographed here at sunrise, covered in a thick blanket of snow

Strong winds and ice cold temperatures layer the snow gums high above Deadhorse Gap

Snow drifts create strong contrasting lines in this otherwise soft white landscape

The fleeting sunshine breaks through casting shadows of the gum trees across the white snow

A pristine snow drift dissected by shadows from surrounding snow gums

The brightly coloured twisted gum trees high above Dead Horse Gap contrast against the white snow

Early morning sun lights up this lone tree on the barron Rocky Plain.
