Newsletter July 2010

7 July, 2010 (14:14) | newsletter | By: Lee Duguid

Hi guys, here's a quick round up of what I've been up to in the last couple months, and what I have coming up.

Photography Course - new dates

I have locked in two course dates for this month, book now to get my fantastic introductory rate which will expire after these course dates! The two dates are the last until later in the year so don't delay. I've had some really positive feedback from past participants, they managed to shoot great photographs on the day, learnt how to use their cameras in manual mode (scary!) and even had time for some fun. For those of you that don't already know, the course includes a booklet with all my tips and tricks, a CD with Photoshop and processing video tutorials and most importantly you get to spend 6 magical hours with me taking photos, asking questions and learning my techniques.

For more information and to book a course please visit here

Photography Awards
I've entered in a couple photography competitions of late working towards official accreditation from the AIPP (Australian Institute of Profession Photography). Of the competitions I entered I won four awards, a Silver at the National AIPP Landscape Photographer of the Year for which I get published in their yearly book, a Silver at the NSW equivalent both for my photo of Flinders Street Station and two bronze awards at this year's Epson International Photography Pano Awards for my images of Picnic Rocks, Tasmania and Lake Pedder, Tasmania.

European Trip

Armed with my new Canon 5D Mark II at the start of next month I will be leaving for a 3 month trip around Europe. I plan to visit the Greek Islands, South and North Italy, Croatia, Austria, Spain and the UK. If anyone has any photo location tips I would love to hear from you. One I'm really looking forward to is the Isle of Skye in my native Scotland. Keep an eye on my blog for updates and maybe even some videos :)

Light Painting Tutorial

For the photographers out there I've posted a capture article and post processing video to show what exactly was involved in creating my star trails image. Photographed at North Head, Manly this photo is made up of several components, painting with a variety of light sources to create a truly unique effect. The star trails is the result of a whopping 30 minute exposure.

That's it for now, I'll be posting new images from the Blue Mountains in the coming weeks, if I don't email you before I leave keep an eye on my blog for updates.

Thanks guys, take care.

Shelly Beach & Cabbage Tree Bay, Manly, Sydney

26 May, 2010 (10:31) | latest images | By: Lee Duguid

The walkway from Manly Beach to Shelly Beach is somewhere I visit often as do many locals with good reason, it's beautiful. I'm a great fan of Cabbage Tree Bay and often find myself drawn to there in an effort to build up my local portfolio. After all the recent rain this morning was one of few that was clear enough to photograph but still had enough cloud to keep it interesting.

Light Painting - Manly, Sydney
Something a bit different. I went out last night for a few hours after sunset with a bunch of light painters from Flickr with an array of cool lights. This is the result of a 30 minute exposure to capture the star trails composited with other images to light the foreground, the window frame, the inside of the bunker, and the light trail leading towards the camera.

Comments are always welcome :)

Here are some photos from I recent shoot I did for a friend Heidi. Photographed locally at Fairlight rock pool a month or so back I used only available light, no flash, no bounce sheet. Enjoy!

Thanks to the model Heidi for all her hard work :)

I went back to Little Manly Cove the other day, a local beach in Manly with a great ocean pool. This image is the result of a one minute exposure, sufficient time to allow the fast moving clouds to streak through the sky.

Newsletter January 2010

12 January, 2010 (14:06) | newsletter | By: Lee Duguid

Happy New Year, hello and welcome to my first newsletter of 2010. Since we last spoke I've been to the North Island of NZ, dabbled in tilt shift time lapse video making, shot a models portfolio and published my first photographic guide (Manly, NSW). In between all of that I've been organising my exhibition at Ash's Table, processed some new images, consumed half a turkey and celebrated New Year! Here are some points of interest:

Exhibition Ash's Table - Reminder
Starting January 13th running for 6 week I will be exhibiting at Ash's Table Cafe, Manly. I hope you can make it along, have a coffee and check out my images.

Ivanhoe Hotel Manly - Australia Day
On Australia Day (Tuesday 26th January), 11am-3pm I will be displaying 10 images from the Northern Beaches on the lobby bar plasma screens. A good excuse to go for a beer not that you need one on Australia day!

New Zealand - new images
To keep up to date with all my new images subscribe to the RSS feed of the latest images section.

This month I've got some new shots from New Zealand's North Island. I managed to get a few in whilst dodging the rain clouds, unfortunately it was a bit of a wasted trip in that respect. I'll be posting more in the coming weeks as I get time to process them.

I've been taking some photos and processing them exclusively using my iPhone. There are a couple of great apps for processing which I use in combination to get the desired results, Best Camera by Chase Jarvis and PS Mobile. Here are some shots taken over the holidays, enjoy!

Twelve Apostles, Australia

Twelve Apostles, Australia

Welcome to LeeDuguid.com.au the newsletter!

It's been a busy few months since my last newsletter with a couple of photo trips and my first solo exhibition.

Solo Exhibition update

Thanks to everyone who visited my first solo exhibition at RAW studios in Manly. It was a great success with hundreds of visitors over the 10 days and even a write up in the local newspaper, the Manly Daily. I've posted some images from the opening night here for those interested.

Exhibition GIG Gallery
As part of 'Northern Expressions' a Northern Beaches groups of artists I will be exhibiting two images at the Gig Gallery in Glebe. For more information please visit the Gig Gallery's website. The opening night is on Tuesday 27th October (sorry about the late notice), please come and join me for a drink.

Canvas prints - new pricing
After printing the impressive 39 X 59 North Curl Curl canvas (1m x 1.5m) for my exhibition I've decided to offer this size for all my high resolution images. It really does have a massive visual impact and looks great on a feature wall. With the introduction of this product and in the lead up to Christmas I have decided to lower my canvas prices on the larger sizes. These great new prices are available immediately so purchase soon for Christmas to avoid disappointment.

Framing & Canvas Stretching
As a free service to my customers I am happy provide print framing and canvas stretching at cost. As I have close ties with local framers in the Northern Beaches this can often be at a reduced price otherwise offered. Please email or call for further information.

Sydney & Northern Beaches

16 October, 2009 (13:42) | latest images | By: Lee Duguid

Here are some of my latest images from around my neck of the woods, Sydney's Northern Beaches. The first couple are from Turimetta, I would have to say the best spot for photography on the beaches. Visit it at the right time of year and the rocks will be covered in amazing neon green weed. The next shot is from Little Manly Cove, shot here on very stormy evening. The wind was blowing a gale and had even helped wash one of the boats about 5 metres up on to the beach. Next up is a photo of Manly Lagoon which was shot for Manly Council as part of the Manly Lagoon festival. The next two are from a trip to Freshwater Beach at sunrise. It was certainly a more memorable sunrise, glad I got up in time. Finally is a panoramic photo taken at Balls Head Reserve of the Opera House, Harbour Bridge and Sydney Skyline.

Manly Beach – Storm Drain Pipes

18 August, 2009 (22:06) | other projects | By: Lee Duguid

I took this one the other day a short while after sunset. It is the result of a 30 second exposure. I'm not sure if anyone would really like to buy it for their wall (but you never know!) so I haven't got it for sale in a gallery. I do like it though, maybe I'll print it one day.

I will be taking part in the Manly Lagoon Life Festival this coming weekend as part of the 'Artists with Easels' group. If you see me come and have a chat, I'll be wondering around with my camera trying to find a unique angle to shoot of the lagoon. I'll also be promoting my exhibition, handing out flyers and maybe displaying some of my work so hope to see you there.

Manly Dam – Mountain Biking…

13 March, 2009 (23:34) | other projects | By: Lee Duguid

Today I went taking some promo shots for a mate who is about to depart on a cycling trip from South to the North of Australia (the mad man!). Here are some shots from the outing at Manly Dam on Sydney's Northern Beaches. The aim was to include the trailer but not do the usual low wide angle shots that so many mountain biking magazines do.

Check out his website and blog about all things cycle related: www.mushypea.net
