Thanks for the tips David (and for stopping by), I would love to see your results if you would like to share. I now also use live view in exposure simulation mode on the 5D Mark II to compose and focus my shots. It saves me taking the filter off every time I change composition, although I will probably change over to the Lee 10 stop filter soon so I can also use a grad for the sky and simply drop it into the filter holder.

I've been using the B+W 10 stop solid grad here in Sydney now for several months. Once you go through a number of listed protocols (recorded on my mobile phone should I forget), the results are spectacular, even with jpegs. The secret, of course, is in the preparation, such as accurate framing, manual exposure and manual focusing; and the usual mirror lock-up, IS off on your lens if you have it, ISO 50 for 5D/2 users, your spirit level, a RAW plus jpeg setting and use of your cable release - and, a VERY solid tripod. All this before you hit PhotoShop!
